Newmillerdam is an absolute joy at this time of year. There are a series of linked trails which have been designed to help you explore the park more fully and which will give you more variety than the popular Lakeside path. All the paths have been way marked and colour coded. If you start from the main car park and want a circular walk, then follow the signs at the top of the posts. The lower indented signs on the reverse of the posts are intended for those walking in the other direction. The Boundary Walk and its extension is by far the most demanding in terms of its length, uneven ground and steepness. The other trails are suitable for most people and with a little effort, pushchairs too. After you've enjoyed your walk why not call in to The Pledwick for a bite to eat or a well earned pint?

The Lakeside Path (Blue) Distance 2kms, 1.2miles Time 30mins (Causeway route) or 2.6kms, 1.6miles Time 40mins (longer bridge route) This is the easiest and most popular walk and is suitable for all ages and abilities. There is an option to cross the lake at the earliest opportunity at the causeway, or to walk on along the whole length of the lake and cross by the bridge.

The Lakeside Path Extension (Yellow) Distance1km, 0.6miles. Time15mins. When you reach the end of the lake continue on the same side of the lake until you reach the Boundary walk (Black). Continue to follow the yellow markers until you rejoin the Lakeside Path on the other bank of the lake.

The Quiet Walk (Red) Distance 2.7kms, 1.7miles. Time 40 mins (return walk). Designed to find the quietest areas so that the sounds of the park can be appreciated, the route begins from the steps beside the main car park and ends after you have enjoyed a forest loop where you can join the Lakeside Path. You can return along the Lakeside path or retrace your steps along the Quiet Walk following the lower indented red markers on the post.

The Boundary Walk (Black) Distance 4.5kms, 2.8miles Time 1hr 15mins This is the longest and most challenging but perhaps the most rewarding of the walks within the park. The walk climbs up from the car park, through the Arboretum, through the Wood yard near the entrance from the A61 and down onto the Chevet Branch Line. After 200 metres turn left into the trees and up to the top of the rise to follow the boundary of the park all the way back to the East Lodge. The eastern section of the path is very uneven and particular care should be taken on this part. This description begins in the car park, but the walk is equally enjoyable if you start at the entrance near to the Dam Inn and take the path up to the left just after East Lodge and follow signs indented in the posts.

The Boundary Walk Extension (Green) Distance 1.9kms, 1.2miles. Time 25mins. From the top of the rise mentioned in the walk above rejoin the Chevet Branch Line and for about 800 metres until you reach an inclined path up towards the bridge to Notton. Near the top of the rise take the steps down to the footpath across the field, turn left at the hedge, cross the stream by the bridge and follow the path across the field to re- enter the park by a gate. Continue until you rejoin the Boundary walk (Black) turning to your right at the junction.

A691 Durham close overnight from September 15th

A BUSY main road is to be closed overnight for three weeks for repairs. The A691 Framwellgate Peth through Durham City is to be resurfaced overnight between Monday, September 15, and Tuesday, October 7. It will be closed from 7pm to 7am from the County Hall roundabout to, and including, the A690 Millburngate roundabout. Durham County Council says the improvements are essential and work is being carried out overnight to reduce delays as much as possible.

The road will be open as usual from 7am to 7pm.

When the closure is enforced, diversions will be put in place. John Reed, the council’s head of technical services, said: “This important work is part of our annual carriageway resurfacing programme. “We are doing our best to keep disruption to a minimum by making sure the road closures are put in place overnight at times of low traffic flows. We thank residents for their patience in advance.”

Scalm Park Presidents Day 2014

Please clear your diary on the 4th of October. We're having a hoe-down at Scalm Park. All in aid of transplant charities. It's our 10th year (10th year of my father's transplant also) which is the given expectancy of a transplant. So we want to make this the best year yet. There'll be a fishing and golfing competition during the day, a family fun day during the afternoon, then a auction and sing along with a country singer. Fancy dress of wild west theme. If you can't make it, any donation would be incredible, be it money or a prize. Let's make this a year to remember.

Whitby Goth Weekend - 31st October to 2nd November 2014

Whitby Goth Weekend, often abbreviated to WGW or simply referred to by attendees as Whitby, is a twice-yearly music festival for goths, in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England, organised by Jo Hampshire who runs Top Mum Promotions.

The origins of WGW lie in an ad hoc meeting of around forty pen-pals who Jo had met through NME and which was arranged in 1994. Jo states that Whitby was chosen for its Dracula connections. The festival was held yearly until 1997, when it became twice-yearly, now held in April and October. It has since grown into one of the most popular goth music events in the world, attracting attendees from across the UK and around the world. The main event is held at the town's largest venue Whitby Spa Pavilion (known just as ‘The Spa’), and the popular Bizarre Bazaar 'Goth Market' is also held here along as well as at Whitby Leisure Centre and Whitby Brunswick Centre. Other venues such as RAW Nightclub and The Shambles are used for official fringe events, and various venues including The Resolution, The Rifle Club & The Metropole are used for unofficial events. Although referred to as a "weekend" it includes events during the day on Friday and Saturday as well as fringe events on the Thursday, Sunday and Monday. These events include additional club nights, markets, and a charity football match between visiting goth team Real Gothic, and local team Stokoemotiv Whitby led by Jon Stokoe the ex editor of local newspaper the Whitby Gazette on the Sunday. There are often unofficial day events that vary from year to year including sandcastle building competitions, picnics, photoshoots and boat trips. During the October/November event there is also an independent custom car show, 'Whitby Kustom', that takes place in the grounds of West Cliff School adjacent to Whitby Leisure Centre.
